The Bergamo plain was a border land with the duchy of Milan for mostly the entire middle ages. the fortresses built by the feudal lords until the venetian domination, make it rich in castles and surrounding walls, most of them renovated and visitable. therefore, coming to this south part of the Bergamo province means to visit one or more of these buildings, some of which draw their origin from a historical process known as “incastellamento” (IX-X centuries) and well-described in the Toubert's masterpiece book “from the land to the castles”. some of them, with the time passing by, turned into seigniorial residences as a sign of the economic and political preeminence of their owners. this social supremacy is also witnessed by other palaces or buildings explicitly conceived for living or production purposes (like the Filandone in Martinengo).

The Bergamo plain is furthermore rich in artworks which give proof of a deeply-rooted Christian devotion going far back in time: there are several parish churches sometimes of ancient origin, sometimes monumental, which are full of altarpieces, frescos, canvas and sculptures created by nationally- and internationally-renowned artists. Across Bergamo will be pleased to guide all those interested to the knowledge of these gifts of the human genius and its creative skills; it will lead them through a still very green territory, crossed by water streams and spotted with residual wood areas (giving evidence of a past where local woods had a strong impact on the territory).
